Pixel Advertising - What is it?
This is a way to display advertising on the web. The number of pixels the advertisement occupies determines the cost.
Pixel advertising became popular at the end of 2005 when the British student Alex Tew created his "The Million Dollar Homepage" website. He persuaded advertisers to buy space measured in pixels on the homepage. There were 1 million pixels of space available, at a price $1 USD per pixel. It took Tew of about five months to sold all the ad space to make over one million dollars. That way, pixel advertising became popular worldwide.
Many websites that host pixel ads exist in a diversity of composition. As a rule, they follow Tew's example to sell pixel ads in 100 pixel "blocks" as" sell ad". This is the smallest size to display something meaningful and at the same time easily clickable. There are newer sites which offer additional features- they make possible a larger image to appear when a visitor hover the cursor over a small pixel ad, where as others allow pixel ads to be bought for a period of time.
Tew's success is the reason for the development of various "Do it yourself" pixel scripts such as the Million Pixel Script and GPix Pixel Ad Script. They make it easy for people with little knowledge or skills to implement a pixel ad system on their website.
